Alnus hollandiana seed and pollen catkins

Alnus, the alder, is a member of the birch family, or Betulaceae. These specimens are the inflorescences or catkins of this tree and come from the Bridge Creek flora of Fossil, Oregon, of Oligocene age. On the left is a specimen showing a branch bearing alder infructescences,  and on the right is an example of a pollen-bearing catkin.
