Chaloneria cormosa phloem

Phloem is usually not well preserved in fossil plants.

Here you can see fairly well preserved sieve cells in Chaloneria cormosa from
the Upper Pennsylvanian Steubenville, Ohio coal ball locality.

The thin areas in the cells are sieve areas. As is typical of pteridophytes, Chaloneria
has only sieve cells--no companion cells or sieve tubes.
