Liriodendron
Liriodendron, the so-called tulip tree or tulip poplar, is a handsome, fast growing tree of Asia and eastern North America that produces large, often yellow and orange flowers. When the petals fall off, the fruit is elongate and contains numerous samaras along an elongate axis. The seedling on the left was photographed in southern Ohio. The fossil leaf specimen on the right is from Emerald Creek, in the Miocene of Idaho.
