Munce's Hill * Paleocene locality central Alberta

Although Onoclea fern compressions are well known in the Paleocene of western Canada, the faulting that occured after deposition leads to highly fragmentary fossil remains and it is difficult to collect large pieces of the plants. Onoclea fossils were exavated carefully and photographed in the field.
On the left is a specimen of fertile Onoclea with its beadlike appearance. Note the numerous diagonal cracks in the rock matrix. On the right the people are pointing to positions where vegetative and fertile fronds of Onoclea were excavated.
